Radiation…in perspective

In reading a post on the likely fallout from the Fukushima reactors, I was incredibly amused to find this very useful and well-referenced schematic that shows the relative levels of radiation exposure for various activities.

It helps to put some of those numbers you hear on the news in perspective.  It’s also useful to keep in mind that yes, we get exposed to radiation every day.  Also, that when the normal radiation levels are vanishingly low, then something “thousands of times higher than normal”…still might not be anything to worry about.

I was also just amused that the folks who put that diagram together were the same folks responsible for the very funny and often scientifically accurate XKCD comic.  Which has this wonderful jewel that made my day not too long ago:
